Both are super artsy shaft productions. Very similar art style. Both are in a school setting where apart from the protagonist, nearly all characters are female. Both manage to have very strong moe vibes while not being completely basic.

Unique animation, surreal imagery, the LGBTQ, girls who run really fast and devils, yes this is what those two anime have in common. Hanamonogatari and Devilman: Crybaby are both shows about a person who gains some magic devil powers and needs to stop another demon (or many other demons in the case of Devilman). Both story's protagonist are more or less canonically homosexual and contrary to most shows with queer characters they actually have a personality apart being queer and just this fact is astonishing. The main characters of both anime have conflicts with their best friend in the last days of their high schools. Both main characters are playing sports - swimming in Free! ES, basketball in Hana. While one has supernatural element and the other doesn't, both have some emotional moments. Both have some characters who might have been permanently injured.

Both shows are featuring the characters playing basketball, but not the usual basketball, since their characters have their own kind of "super abilities". In both shows the characters have to face their past and inner-self issues in order to grow, move forward and also to understand and face their opponents in basketball. Both have funny, sad, and touching moments. Both have colorful, neat, and decent arts. If in Kuroko the players are boys, in Hana the players are girls. Both shows are still highly recommended if you're new for basketball stuffs and only want to watch for character developments.

Two beautiful and colorful high school yuri stories. They present themselves in super unique ways and end with an amazing catharsis. Yes, Hanamonogatari is a sequel, but the shows it's a sequel to are worth watching and share YKA's non-standard presentation and unique style of fanservice.

A boy has to do with basketball girls. The shows offer sports as their background, and there are challenges between the girls.
