Main characters are totally different, but both animes have hearwarming stories with ghosts.

Ichiro and Chie have a lot in common, both are over ten years old and live with their family, they hate school, have pat and are too different from other children, Ichiro can see ghosts and helps them and chie nearly runs family diner by herself. Ichiro and Chie go through a lot of trouble but they remain cheerful.

Both are based on seinen mangas (with explains the number of dirty jokes). Both are starred by little brats who insults their moody mothers, have a pet puppy, an alcoholic fathers, a sister and a grandpa. Most of the characters eyes where drawn in a simplistic way.

Might be a bit of a stretch, but Gintama and Hanada Shounen-Shi both have crude humor. Both MCs are (dirty) jerks on the outside, but are actually fairly kind. Both have emotional/feel good moments and are covered with sprinkles of funny.

Slightly similar to Hanada. Both main characters can see spirits and not very happy about that, but still helping them (for various reasons)

Hanada Shounen-shi is a hidden gem that captures a quite similar atmosphere to Mushishi (or Natsume Yuujinshou for that matter). This show made me laugh and cry. A lot. It's much different from current anime and makes you feel somewhat nostalgic. The setting is a realistic one, presumably post WWII, although the war is never directly mentioned. The comedic parts are sweet and fun and the story of the humans/ghosts are gentle and moving. It's outrageously unknown and deserves much better.
