2 of the best jetfighteranime classics out there. except for the concept that macross is a more ´universal´matter, and have state of the art tech. Betrayal, check Rilvalry, check Conflicts, sort of but in macross a new machine cause the real trouble, area 88 shows a real conflicts like in real life. Hot chick in the centre of it all, Double check that!!

Both series were exemplary when it came to showing the horrors of war. Also, the 2 series have a side love interest that weighs heavily on the decisions of the main protagonists. The dubs both have Chris Patton voiicing the main charachters.

LOGH and Area 88, while quite different in setting, have similar feel and themes. They're both 80s OVAs with a military setting. By being in OVA format, they don't shy away when showing violence, so there's plenty of blood to be seen. This does a good job of provoking the anti-war themes present in both. I really think if you like one you'd probably like the other, due to them being made in the same time period and their similar themes and characters.

Both lean hard into the horrors and psychological wounds of warfare, though Zeta Gundam goes a bit heavier on the melodrama and the political intrigue. Also, lotsa cool 80s dogfights make lizard brain happy.

The Sky Crawlers and Area 88 are both anime that revolve around fighter pilots being forced to partake in a conflict. Looking deeper, they also share many things thematically: -in both anime the main character wrestles w/ the dilemma of fighting in a meaningless conflict -there are journalists present in both covering said conflict, not just how war is fought but how war is perceived -both have a unconventional conclusion, one which is neither happy nor sad but true to their respective themes -if you're into airplanes and flying, those sections of these anime are very well animated, especially the dogfights between the warplanes -both have some romantic subtext  read more

Both protagonists have at one point questioned their own actions of having needed to kill people. Both characters were also involved in war, and have had a difficult time trying to recover from the PTSD. The difference is that Violet manages to find a purpose to live outside the battlefield, while Kazama is unable to let go, according to what the adaptation showed. Both shows have great animation quality as well, though Area 88 is known for that during its own time as opposed to today.

Similiar animation style and feel (at times). Area 88 is much better, but if you like first 3 OVAs of Megazone, you'll really like Area 88 OVA.

Very similar animation style and character design. Good action and violence. Excellent 90's anime title.

Both of these shows take a comparatively realistic approach to depicting warfare, and focus to an extent on the human and psychological cost of it.

Shintani and Leiji Matsumoto both stay true to a somewhat 70's character design, and they both feature a lot of nice airplane action. Area 88 focuses on post-Vietnam era jet fighters while Slipstream focuses on only a few World War II era fighters. But what makes these similar is the attention to detail and level animation both possess. I also think that shows like Macross (and all of its sequels) have yet to achieve the intense thrill of the dogfight like these do.
