Steins;Gate Movie: Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu

After a year in America, Kurisu Makise returns to Akihabara and reunites with Rintarou Okabe. However, their reunion is cut short when Okabe begins to experience recurring flashes of other timelines as the consequences of his time traveling start to manifest. These side effects eventually culminate in Okabe suddenly vanishing from the world, and only the startled Kurisu has any memory of his existence.

In the midst of despair, Kurisu is faced with a truly arduous choice that will test both her duty as a scientist and her loyalty as a friend: follow Okabe's advice and stay away from traveling through time to avoid the potential consequences it may have on the world lines, or ignore it to rescue the person that she cherishes most. Regardless of her decision, the path she chooses is one that will affect the past, the present, and the future.

Such a great continuation of the story.

To be honest, Steins Gate as a series alone is more than enough satisfaction. You could just stop watching there and be fine without this movie, but I'm glad they made this movie.

The movie continues after the OVA. Kurisu visits the gang after returning from America, and everything is happy until Kyoma's time shenanigans from the past start to mess with him. I don't want to spoil too much, but let's just say it's ultimately up to Kurisu to help Kyoma get out of the mess he got himself into due to the events of the main series. It ... ultimately builds upon the relationship between Kurisu and Kyoma, bringing them to an even closer understanding of one another. Symptoms of watching this movie can include joy, heart break, psychological scarring, feelings of sadness, and maybe even a drive to pump you up.

Overall, this movie is a great continuation of the story that wasn't really needed, but I'm glad it happened. 10/10 because it's exactly like the main series and adds more content.

Mixed Feelings

Story - 4
The story is okay if you turn your brain off. I like that it serves to give us a deeper look into Kurisu and Okabe's relationship, but it really didn't make sense. Like, it literally does not make sense and it seems like online many people say to just pretend it is non canon because it brings up so many plot holes if it is canon.
So, I would recommend watching it to get more content from the loveable Steins;Gate characters, but just don't ask any why questions, because the answer will be "yeah... that part just doesn't really make sense, just forget ... it".

Art - 8
Same level as Steins;Gate. It is good, but nothing special.

Sound - 8
Same level as Steins;Gate. It is just okay. I think some spots could have used more dramatic of music.

Characters - 7
It was nice to see Mayuri again and Okabe kind of in his fun, mad scientist state. It was cool to see Mayuri and Okabe as kids. However, I don't love Kurisu as much as I do Okabe and Mayuri, and since the film focuses more on her than them, I didn't enjoy it as much. So be prepared for Kurisu to basically narrate this movie.

Enjoyment - 5
It was okay watching as I like my Mayuri and Okabe. And the anime was actually enjoyable to watch even though the story was full of plot holes. However, because the story didn't make sense in the end, I didn't enjoy it as much.

Overall - 5
Hey, give it a watch if you just watched Steins;Gate and want a little more. Personally, I really like the last 2 minutes of the movie. It kind of ties it all together for me. It is just a really nice ending that makes you smile because you freaking love how great this show was and how great the characters are.

The movie is an anime original and it shows. It ignores everything that has been built up. Everything feels arbitrary. Each plot twist feels as though it was made up by the writer on the spot. Nothing follows from previous explanations.

The original Steins;Gate wasn't entirely free of plot holes (e.g. a phone doesn't have the ability to deliver electromagnetic energy specifically to tiny parts of the brain; if phones had the capabilities depicted in the anime, prank calls could be utilized for mass terrorism; data compression has nothing to do with physical compression; etc) but at least it was 90% logically consistent. Meanwhile the ... movie has 0% consistency; every plot device is pulled out of thin air and discarded immediately after.

The most insidious part of the movie is that it erodes the foundation upon which the original story (and S;G 0) was built. In particular, the movie contradicts both Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 in terms of how the timeline system and Reading Steiner work. In doing so, it trivializes some of the best twists in Steins;Gate 0, thereby undermining the experience of any viewer who watches the movie before playing the S;G 0 game (or watching the anime, which I wouldn't recommend). Whereas the games consistently hold that timelines can only be altered by deliberate action, and that Reading Steiner only activates when this type of alteration exceeds a set impact threshold, in the movie, anything can happen for no particular reason.

If you're looking for a fanservice episode, I guess the movie is not too terrible. Personally I found it a waste of time.
