Both share this rather somber and hopeless tone, with "young-ish" characters who are already jaded. In both series the main character is changed by the introduction of the female lead for the better (relative to the plot, not necessarily better legally wise in the case of Sensen Spike Hills). The biggest differences are in the plot, with Inu Neko Jump being about regaining some former passion for long jumping in college and Sensen Spike Hills being about stealing the answer key for a college entrance exam. While sharing a similar tone throughout the majority of the manga Inu Neko Jump has rather "safer" subject matter
