Plotwise, both series start off light and fluffy, but all of a sudden become dark and angsty after the story picks up; however, I would say the most similar thing between the two is the characters. In D. Gray Man, you have Allen, who is rather easy-going but fiercely dedicated to his mission when need be. His counterpart in Tsubasa would be Syaoran, who is an all-around friendly guy, but when it comes to the princess, he can be a little overprotective. Lenalee cares about her friends a lot in D. I think these manga (along with xxxHolic and stuff like Pandora Hearts that began around the same time) have a lot of thematic similarities around things like grief and desire to change the past, particular kinds of fascinatingly self loathing characters, etc. that they handle in similar ways. TRC does not consistently have the 2000s Hot Topic gothic aesthetic sensibility that D.Gray-Man does, but it absolutely goes hard with it when it goes for it.
