They share the same "deep love-story destined to die due to degenerative illness" theme. In particular Socrates in Love prefers show all the teenage feelings of timid and unexperienced students, Diamond Dust is more about social outcasts: a depressed pianist and an indie artist facing the problems of being unable to communicate to the world. They share the same "pathos" and similar extreme and desperate sentimental actions: going to Australia and "smuggling" the grandmother's ashes for the two students in love, completing and performing the song "Diamond Dust" for the two musicians. Tragic endings in both works, but quite fitting the idea of sentimental "Bildungsroman".
