Both series star a young woman and take place in a fantasy setting. The main character in each takes charge of her situation and becomes powerful. Each also has a well-developed romance.
The stories to me are similar, while not plotwise, but they both focus on love and war, and the drawings are similar. Either way, if you liked Red River, you'd love Basara, and vice versa.

Red River is absolute crap compared to Basara. If you enjoyed Red River, you'll LOVE Basara. Or you won't, because you like trashy shoujo. But that's okay.

Both are action adventure shoujo series with a historical setting, a strong and empowered butt-kicking female lead, and a healthy dose of romance throughout. If you like the way any of those aspects are portrayed in one series, I can pretty much guarantee you'll love the other; save for Yuri's modern origins in Red River, they're actually extremely similar in tone and content (without being similar enough to be anything close to boring).

both take place a long time ago. theyre not really that similar, but if you like one you'll probably like the other. red river has more romance, more shoujo-esc, while basara has more adventure

This two doesn't pass in the same place but with the same vibe. Both have a girl that must be strong to defend what is dear to hear and accomplishing that make herself a hero.
Very involved, powerful female protagonist who realizes her weaknesses-- especially when involving their loved ones. They both give the same feel-- a sort of mystic love that transcends all boundaries, whether it be time or hate. Lovers of Basara will find a more one-sided tale in Red River, while Red River transfers will find a truly three-dimensional world where there is a consequence for killing anyone.

Both have a very similar vibe and involve a girl who is thrown into war and grows strong in order to defend what she loves. Both series are also from the 90s/early 2000s and have that feel as well. If you like one you should definitely take a chance on the other.
both are in a historical war setting, the female leads become badasses, and there's a lot of bittersweet romance
I was constantly reminded of Basara while reading this; the two are very similar in that they share a historical war setting, forbidden love, and female protagonists that transform into incredibly strong characters.

Both stories have deep character development as well as elements of politics, war, romance, strong female lead, enchanting fantasy world, and extremely addicting story-line. I felt withdrawal after reading both of these. They're so similar, yet different if you loved one, you'll be sure to love the other.
I think Basara is a bit darker and more complex than Red river/Anatolia story. I truly loved both. I hope you do too!
