Both about struggling in Juvenile Prison.

Both mangas begin in a juvenile prison with plenty of cruelty. While Rainbow is about camaraderie and surviving with the help of friends, Shamo is the opposite, with Ryo pushing everyone out of his way, trusting only martial arts and himself to survive. Shamo is a more realistic and nihilistic take on how juvenile prison and abuse affect a young man, while Rainbow paints an idealistic picture of how despite the hardships you can achieve happiness. Rainbow's characters are strictly good or bad, while Shamo makes you doubt if Ryo even is the good guy, to the point that you even despise him at times.
