Both are shounen manga that focus on sports: Slam Dunk is about basketball, while Hajime no Ippo is about boxing. They are character-driven stories, which create similar moods: both have a lot of funny scenes and intense matches. Also, many characters in these manga have similar personalities (and some of them are even delinquents).

except that one is about Basketball and the other about Boxing. There are similarities.
- They both have great stories with faithful anime adaptations.
- The sports in the anime are grounded unlike kuroko no basket or Baki the Grappler. (Not that kuroko no basket or Baki the Grappler are bad manga.)
- Both manga have a great cast of characters.
- They both contain good comedy that genuinely made me laugh sometimes.
