Both stories center around a male character and his quest to become a better boxer. Ashita no Joe is in my opinion a must read if you love manga (especially if you like sports manga).
Both are sports manga that focus on boxing. Both manga have many great fights, sometimes with unpredictable outcomes, and also a lot of character development. They provide an in-depth look into the world of boxing, and show the struggles that boxers often have to face.

Both of these manga series are sports manga that focus on boxing. They both have incredible fight scenes, that last over a couple of chapters. The MC in both series have a strong passion for boxing, and almost always win, only suffering a few losses in both series. Ashita no Joe is a must-read, if you love sports manga, but I have not read much of Hajime no Ippo, so I cannot say the same.
Hajime No Ippo shows good side of boxing, comedy, too much "fantasy" while fighting. but Ashita No Joe is Dark side of Boxing... Realistic Boxing manga, even fights is so much realistic, brutal that i was so nervous and amazed while reading/watching it. If you love Realistic mangas, storys about "How life works" then you should read it. It is the first manga that is deep inside my heart Forever.

Both great boxing manga, while Ashita no Joe is a true classic of the medium, Hajime no Ippo is a long, well built story, with an amazing cast of characters.
- Boxing fans will enjoy both stories, since they are scientifically correct (especially Ippo)
- If you know nothing about boxing, you can still read both titles since they both start from square one
- The art is great, while Ashita no Joe is a very old manga, and the art is certainly different from today's standards for good, it still succeeds in creating an interesting atmosphere. For Ippo, it improves as time passes, first part is pretty
