Bokura wa Minna Kawai-so is basically Maison Ikkoku updated from 1980 to the early 2000s.
Female authors: Check.
Student male protagonist? Check, Ikkoku has a ronin student, Kawai-so has a high-schooler.
Old boarding house setting? Check. Ikkoku-kan vs Kawai-so.
Older love interest hard to communicate with? Check, Kyoko Otonashi vs Ritsu Kawai.
Drunk, perverted, meddling roommates? Check. On Ikkoku they are borderline criminal, on Kawai-so they have more redeeming qualities (not many qualities, mind you).
Main character wants to escape the situation right now but that would mean not being with his love interest, so he backpedals? Check.
