Main characters of both mangas are similiar like 2 sides of the same coin. They both want to become stronger at all costs, tackling impossible challenges and overcoming them, developing and changing their character along the way. The difference is that Ryou from Shamo is a vile sociopath hated by everyone, like stereotypical villain from kung-fu movie. Both walk the path of blood and darkness- but these manga lets you wonder who is truly dark. The killers or us?

Shamo and Vagabond are both seinen manga, are quite lengthy and both have many fight scenes throughout. Both have a main character that strives to understand the meaning of true strength. Differences are that Shamo focuses on a variety of martial arts whereas Vagabond focuses on samurai. Also Shamo is a lot darker and contains some disturbing scenes, which in Vagabond such scenes are not nearly as... vile. All in all both are wonderful stories that fans of seinen manga should definitely check out.

Both are of a protagonist who is focused solely on his goal of becoming the strongest. Stylistically the manga is similar as well.
