There’s been an apocalypse. You can still summon your cuteness to do cute things, so when the horribleness hits, it’s even worse because, like, it’s cute and stuff, and horrible.
Apocalyptic manga which choose to focus on the human element (the characters, namely cute girls) instead of putting too much emphasis on the actual apocalypse. Gakkou Gurashi is more plot driven than Shooujo Shuumatsu Ryokou, but both of them are stories about overcoming adversity and human connection.

SSR and Gakkougurashi involve moe teenage girls dealing with the end of the normal world as we know it, with them trying to make the best out of their situation through a series of good times. Both are tonally similar, as they show the reader a glimmer of hope that exists in the main cast, dominated mostly by bleak and melancholic world.
