Both deal with characters who find something they need (a reason to walk, how to live, etc.) from someone else. They both do this in a mature and sensible way despite the potential taboo that comes from dealing with age gap relationships/friendships.
The characters feel grounded and real, and takle serious issues in Japanese culture. While My Boy isn't as romantic as Garden of Words (Thats actually a good thing) it still packs enough emotion that even though it will most likely end bittersweet, you will want to see it through anyway.
