Both manga revolve around traditional Japanese history, mostly to do with samurais and both main characters striving to be the strongest. Both series focus heavily on deep bonds of friendship and how these bonds help them move on throughout the series.
Gamaran is more straight forward shounen with one goal right from the start, whereas Samurai Deeper Kyo is more complex, involving the connecting of mysteries to unravel the ultimate truth. Samurai Deeper Kyo also has more of a gender balance, and requires about 10 chapters of reading into the story to actually kick off however.
