Great mangas of Takehiko Inoue. Both are about basketball, with a familiar mood. Slam Dunk have more comedy and REAL have more drama. Both are awesome.
If you don't like basketball or do not enjoy sports manga, read Slam Dunk first. I'm sure you'll love it and you'll want to play basketball.
Both titles are by the same Mangaka, REAL is a more dark and serious Manga. Also both are about basket ball except that in Real is about wheelchair basket ball.
Slice of life, drama, comedy with similar author inou-sensei, this is a heartwarming and tear-jerking manga. Revolves around the story of paraplegic or amputated (leg) man hook on basketball despite their condition and living their daily lives finding what it means to go on living.
Both are about basketball and they share the same author: Takehiko Inoue. If you like Slam Dunk, you'll like Real for sure. This time, it's not about the basketball we are used to know, it's about weelchair basketball! This sport is a new world that we need to know!
Both are basketball manga by the same author, real is much more serious and grim, but they are both about people bonding and building friendships over basketball.

Both mangas are written by the same mangaka (Takehiko Inoue-sensei) and both focus on basketball. While Slam Dunk deals with high school basketball, Real is a more mature themed (seinen) manga about the lives of the characters in it, and how their lives are all connected through basketball and more importantly the role of basketball in their life. Basketball is used to enhance the plot in Real. Both the mangas are unique and realistic in their own way.
If you like Slam Dunk and like to read seinen manga, then you will enjoy reading Real.
