For some reason when I started Annara, Oyasumi Punpun came to my mind immediately. They are dark, psychological and awesome masterpieces. I recommend both of them.
While stories are from different life situations and perspective, they both show deep, psychological struggle of individuals in real life, who wish to escape into their own worlds. Also some characters have symbolic design, which is even better seen when sometimes their inner thoughts and emotions are expressed in excessive or even surreal way.
Annarasumanara and Oyasumi Punpun are coming of age stories, with a great sense of uniqueness. They are both fairly dark in nature and are highly psychological. Furthermore, both stories contain a journey of tremendous struggle with a dark and twisted love between the protagonist and main heroine. Also, both stories represent certain characters not by they way the look but the way they perceive themselves which allows for inhuman and disfigured appearances of certain characters.
In the end both are incredible masterpieces that cannot be forgotten after reading them.
