Story of a depressed young adult with existencional crisis and how the interactions with others influence his life (mostly not in a good way), including family and attempt at romantic relationship. In both works the psychological state of the protagonist is expressed with a gorgeous art, those two titles in general are really nice to look at from art point of view and yet they carry such an ugly story (ugly in a good way). Both have the ability to influence the readers state of mind as the depressing story carries on.

Dark and depressing manga with mentally disturbed protagonists who can't understand people or society. Both protagonists were victim of sexual abuse when they were young and were haunted by the memories when they grew older. Both protagonists fail at life and have had one or two unsuccessful romantic relationships that ended badly. Both use existential crisis as one of their main driving themes. Both series are psychological seinen with lots of drama.

Both are dark depressive stories through life told with an autobiographical sense of style, where the reader is able to connect with the internal mental struggles within the protagonists. Both stories tell tales of a negative upbringing through abuse and isolation as the protagonist becomes separated from society and begins a negative view to life. Both manga deal with the theme of suicidal thoughts as the protagonist struggles to find their own place or reason of being. So, if your looking for a phenomenal manga that tells of a disturbing and depressive life I highly recommend you begin reading one of these immediately. Both   read more

"Ningen Shikkaku" and "Oyasumi Punpun," both created by Inio Asano, share similarities in exploring psychological issues, societal interactions, realistic art styles with strong facial expressions, and dealing with dark themes and human complexities. Both depict the maturity and development of their main characters over time. However, each manga maintains a unique identity and focus, with "Ningen Shikkaku" based on Osamu Dazai's novel and "Oyasumi Punpun" being an original work by Inio Asano.

Osamu Dazai was a brilliant novel writer way back in the time of the golden age of comic books. He was alive when manga wasn't that big yet and was about to have a surge many decades later. In the 1940s, he wrote Ningen Shikkaku and to everyone's surprise, he committed suicide right after finishing it. Some believed this work of his as a last will before leaving. As many events transpire in the manga that deal with very dark and serious issues. Such as depression, mid life crisis and loss of identity and purpose. The main character, just like Punpun, is lost in the   read more

Stories of depression, existential crisis and extremely complex characters to understand. Both stories feature psychologically unstable characters who are heavily influenced by their families. They were abused from a young age and have a life of a lot of drama, failed romantic relationships and a lot of frustration. There are many metaphors and deep thoughts. I really recommend that you read them!
