Horimiya and Kimi ni Todoke explores the lives of characters from sides that the general public audience knows little about during their presence at school. The main female protagonist are average and plain in terms of their personalities. However as both series progresses, we see a better side of them especially through their interactions with others. Both series has a lighthearted tone and often deals with relationships of various nature. Do note that Horimiya has more of a slice of life tone while Kimi ni Todoke contains more shoujo themes.
Both are comedy romance series, in which characters form relationships after discovering a new hidden side to the other, one which they didn't show in school.
