Both mangas deal with girls who are "different" from other girls in their grade, they've fallen in love with a popular boy. These two mangas are under the comedy, shoujo, romance, and school life genres. They mostly fall under the typical shoujo plot, like angry love rivals, but nonetheless, they're worth reading.
Both are romantic shoujo manga that feature similar artstyles are both comedic and feature great heartwarming moments.
Both are light-hearted comedies about a pair falling in love. Potential "rivals" do appear, but as the main pairing shows little interest in these other potential romantic interests, there is not much in the way of the typical "love triangle" development (a BIG plus in my book). Instead, the stories tend to focus on the development of feelings between the main characters, and the misunderstandings between them that they overcome.
Love and friendship is the focus of both. If you can't get around much in love, you can focus on your girlfriends instead.
The difference is comedy. Lovely complex used comedy as an approach to love, while Kimi ni Todoke is more of a melodrama. But both are really effective. Both heroines are strong and independent. They have really good friends to back them up. And the guys are also really cool.
