In both novels the protagonist is haunted by a ghost whose wish he's supposed to fulfill.
The way AnoHana differs from Hikaru is that the ghost is a childhood friend of the protagonist, while in Hikaru, they've only spoken once. The biggest theme in AnoHana is friendship while Hikaru is a bit more about love, but other than that, the main stories are pretty similar.
