Both are shounen that question the moral and aesthetic implications of the demographic. While stylistically different and almost polar-opposites tone-wise, both series go to great lengths to make their point, telling several (rather thematically disconnect) stories in order to amplify the exploration of their main thematic. They both feature a protagonist that challenges shounen conventions and subvert the establish shounen tropes, although Hunter x Hunter is more blatant about it.
