Level E

Level E is an earlier manga by Togashi-sensei; it's sci-fi themed involving aliens living in modern day (well, modern for when it was written anyway) Japan. It's a good, fairly short (three volume) read, that is in turns funny and dark (and made me itch for a crossover with "Men in Black"). What's particularly interesting, and the reason I recommend it to Hunter x Hunter readers, is that Level E has proto versions of some of the ideas used in Hunter x Hunter - the most obvious being Greed Island, and much to a lesser degree the Chimera Ants.

In addition to being written by the same author, Level E has a number of ideas that Togashi would go on to expand upon in Hunter x Hunter. The best example would be the RPG chapters, which seem to have served as a sort of prototype to the Greed Island arc in HxH. While HxH is a fantasy adventure manga consisting of a number of long story arcs connected into one big story, Level E is a short sci-fi series with mystery elements and a more episodic structure.
