These two mangas may start off with a feeling that they're different but in general they're very similar. Both plot involves the protagonist changing into a supernatural creature and had to go through many dark events to become stronger. The protagonists are both involved in a organization that protects people while in Tokyo Ghoul's case it was to protect a friend. These two mangas' genres are very similar as well as partial art.
In each series, there is a threat to the human race. Titans in one, Ghouls in the other. Humans are making efforts to combat them, but the threat always lingers. Both main characters are caught up in trying to figure out what exactly are these creatures and their existence in the world. It is impossible for humans to coincide with these non-human creatures, or is it really? Both Shingeki no Kyojin and Tokyo Ghoul leave you wanting to find out more. Each of them has a dark tone to it, which is very fitting. There are some things you see coming, others not so much.

"Am I human or not?", It's the question that both protagonists of these two series are trying to find in one way or another, each story take a place in a total different time from the other so different weapons and technology development; even so they share in the existence of some fiction-made creatures(titans and ghouls), with Eren (SNK) and Kaneki (Tokyo Ghoul) sharing the same fear through the story...the terror of eating a human !!!.
There are some similar themes between both series such as asking who the real monster is along with suffering and despair. I find the main protagonists to be somewhat similar, though Eren is more about vengeance and Ken is more kind hearted. Not to mention they both become the monsters they feared the most. The level of violence in both is also similar, though I have to say I like the fights in Tokyo Ghoul better. If you're looking for a good horror action manga with a similar vibe to Shingeki no Kyojin, this is the manga for you.

-In both stories, humanity trys to defend itself from getting eaten by mysterious, creepy creatures that feed on human flesh.
-The walls in Attack on Titan isolate everyone from the rest of the world. Ghouls are only in Tokyo, Japan (I might be wrong) which isolates Tokyo from the rest of Japan and the world with dealing with ghouls.
- Eren and Kaneki lose their fathers and mothers at a young age.
-Eren and Kaneki are able to become the monsters they fear/hate the most.
- Eren and Kaneki both accept they are Titan and Ghoul and defeat Jason and Annie. Kaneki eats Jason and Eren tears open Annie's

A cruel world. An unfair world. A diverse world. Why is the world so unjust? Why is it that we need to face hardships over and over and over? These two manga, Shingeki no Kyojin (AoT) and Tokyo Ghoul explore just that. Without knowing the cruelty of the world with their own hands, the main characters (Kaneki Ken and Eren Yeager) are oblivious to the problems of the world. If you need something with an amazing plot and a dark question underlaying it to puzzle yourself over, what you are about to read is going to be perfect for you. I guarantee it.

I'd say they are most similar on the matters of perspective present in the manga. Both have prominent characters who oppose each other, so much so that they'd be willing to kill one another. There are many things they differ on, but at the core they are very similar in their themes and statements.
