Both are series that strongly incorporate the concept of "culture shock" (to a positive effect).
While Izakaya's domain is pretty much entirely food-based (i.e., introducing contemporary Japanese cuisine to a vaguely ancient Roman setting), Thermae Romae covers a wide variety of things (although primarily about architecture).
