Both the male characters struggle with darkness in their hearts, and it is the female characters who bring them back with love and determination. Very, very similar in terms of emotion and depth.

Although the settings and situations are different, both of the men that the heroine loves has a dark past that prevents them from opening up too much to anyone and affects their relationships, but the heroines help drag them out of it. Kare Kano is a bit humorous at times, unlike Hana no Namae, but both give off a dark mood at parts.
