Basically, manga narrating of school life, and great at doing so.
Even though Karekano is more romantic, while Life focuses on friendship, both series have lots of character development. Life is a strong, quite shocking psychological drama and has very few light-hearted moments, but Karekano also gets pretty dramatic and serious at times. Plus, the subject of bullying is prominent in both series (although only for a short time in Karekano). Lastly, they share a simple but expressive art style that does not distract from the story.
If you're sick of dull, overused, happy-go-lucky shoujo manga, try these two.
