It's mainly similar because of their near eastern settings, with references to "One Thousand and One Nights". And they are both shounen, adventure, fantasy, with some action.
Magi and Shokoku no Altair have great creative writing and world building. The character cast offers diversity with their backgrounds and personalities. Throughout both series, there is much history and origins to be learned. There are also fantasy themes with an adventurous tropes. Throughout both series, there's also political affairs and warfare conflicts. Recommended for fans of shounen with a well written story.
Shoukoku no Altair is like magi with more deep politics, tactics and twisted stories with less fantasy.
if you enjoyed magi im sure you will enjoy SnA too

Well. Our main characters are pretty different. One is focused on foreign affairs while the other is a person who is more focused on improving working with Amon. At least near the beginning. I would say that they are close in age.
Our main characters are also surrounded by a group of people.
In both stories, those groups go around and solve problems for other people.
This recommendation probably sounds boring, but the to storys are really similar. As my mom says, "Give a book 60 pages." Give a manga about twice as much.
Both are masterpieces. I really enjoy fantasy that actually takes place in a historical period. Both have awesome characters ( Some of them are SO HOT ). The main character of both is surrounded by strong enemies, but also by strong friends. In other words i highly recommend both for shounen lovers. ^.^
