The two couples presented have a lot of similarities in their personalities. The two girls, Kirino and Nagatoro, regularly mistreat the two boys, who are both older than their partner. There is thus within the two couples a love-hate relationship quite violent, and it can be quite hard for some to actually ship them.
The two works are also famous for the way they have to present "taboo" couples. In Oreimo, it's a love story between a brother and a sister, and in Nagatoro-san, it's between a high school student and his bully.
