Both stories are about reincarnation where we have some "characters star system" in them.. Besides it, or rather with it (reincarnation thing), both of them also deal with topics like philosophy, morality, science, etc..
Story that centers around reincarnation told through various lives of the same "souls" and exploring the question wheter guilt can be carried through multiple lives.
The themes and storytelling between the two are very similar. If you like the idea of interconnected short stories that jump between past, present, and future while dealing with a wide variety of themes, you are likely to enjoy both.
While Spirit Circle was released decades later, the thematic of reincarnation seen in Hi no Tori still remains very interesting. You'll see the same characters undertaking different lives through the circle of reincarnation adding multiple perspectives to a single character.
Spirit Circle might not have a phoenix this time around, but instead, it also has its own immortal entity watching over humanity.
