This is a recommendation for the whole franchises, not just the first title in the series.
Both are adaptations of visual novels by the same authors that centers around mystery with the same format of repeated alternative stories of the same event, each arc revealing different details that can help with solving the mystery and uncovering the truth when put together.
Both are obviously works by the same author given the titles and in fact within the same universe.
Both the part 1 manga of Higurashi and Umineko follow the same structure. The are used to grip a reader into the paranoia and horror they entitle. In these parts a reader first learns who the characters are, where they are and what awaits them. These 1st parts are shrouded in mystery, leaving the reader to wonder the truth of things. Onward, both manga whisper possibility of the supernatural to the reader through the use of a spirit/witch acting upon the characters, without divulging the truth.

A manga adaptation for the very first arc for two series of Ryukishi07's "when they cry" visual novels. Mystery + Horror elements combined with a feel of unpredictably and a similar art style allow for Umineko and Higurashi to feel intertwined in a way and usually if you like one, you'll like the other.
