Both share a common theme of being forcefully stranded on a deserted island. As they are separated from civilization, they struggle against the forces of nature as well as the faults of humanity. They both soon understand that the most dangerous animals are humans themselves.
Both portray a dark tone and give off the same feeling of hopelessness. They explore the mentality of the human mind and how one copes in the face of a desperate situation. While some characters succumb to the pressure, others endure it and become stronger as a result.
