Both shows attempt to establish a sci-fi perspective on what is essentially a magical girl story. Mai Otome has contracts, control gems, and nano-machines to grant girls super-human abilities and transformations. Freezing has nova, stigmata, and limiters which grant girls super-human abilities and transformations. However, where Freezing is a graphic ecchi themed series, Mai Otome is much more tame and favours comedy over blood, breasts, and panty-shots.
