Cute magical girls fighting against monsters.
At first glance, they don't have much in common and Assault Lily seems more light-hearted but Madoka is just the same at the beginning.
Also, if you appreaciated Madoka and Homura relationship dynamics, you will probably like that of Riri and Yuyu.

In seriousness, Madoka Magica and Assault Lily are somewhat very similar in what they give. Girls taking up their life in a duty to fight astronomical forces that bring despair against humanity.
Madoka Magica generally being quite serious on the matter, going as far as to explain the effects and psychology of characters during this juxtaposed hell of a time in life. Group of cute girls fighting monsters, characters' looks and dynamics have a slight similarity. Both were made by Shaft studio.
The meaning of friendship, in my opinion, is felt a little in these two anime. Starting from admiring to being a companion in his life.
Both anime started out as your normal moe anime where everyone seems to be enjoying their life. However, we are greeted by the dark reality of being a Magical Girl/Lily, which while they are fulfilling their duty, they may get injured or even die.
Both also feature some depressing and emotional moments. Overall, Madoka has a sadder and more serious tone compared to Assault Lily.
If you crave more Madoka, Assault Lily is a good alternative for you.
