A strange talking animal lures our MC into a strange world and promises them something. A bunch of young girls all putting their dreams on the line. A distant, dark-haired girl with ties to our naive main character and inexplicable motives. There's more in common between these two shows than you might expect -- Revue Starlight takes a fair amount of inspiration from Madoka Magica, despite being a much different show. Both have a different take on the Mahou Shoujo concept and have a somewhat tragic third act. Madoka is much heavier both in tone and violence whereas Starlight is far less violent and has a slice of life going on on top of the magical girl thing. Some of the relationships between the girls do remind me of Madoka, but on a good way. Starlight is not as intense or experimental as Madoka, but it has great pacing, abundant energy and is just simple fun

They are pretty much the same even the wish of the main character but revue starlight is softer without despair for anyone who don’t really want to be depressed but just emotional

Both series have literal bows and swords with their own purpose, while madoka directing is almost felt like a theater experience, Revstar is the theater itself and share deep messages of friendships with a good crafted symbolism

Visually stunning anime for those who like tragic lesbians with swords. Both share a lot of character types, themes, narrative tools, and subversions on the magical girl genre to make it more tragic. Madoka leans more into horror-esque storytelling while Revue Starlight is more for musical theater fans. Otherwise, they are fairly similar stories.
