When it comes to takes on magical girls, Sailor Moon is the known classic, while Madoka is known for taking a dark spin on the classic, not shying away from focusing on the tragedy of being a magical girl, yet Sailor Moon, despite being a classic doesn't shy away from pushing boundaries for the time either.

Both are good magical girl stories where school girls transform into magical beings to fight the forces of evil and save the world. Where Sailor Moon is the classic magical girl series, Madoka Magica takes a different new approach. Both of these series are worth watching if you haven't already seen them.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal is directly based off of the manga, so it contains the much darker tones that the manga is known for rather than the more lighter tones from the 1992 anime. If you enjoyed those darker tones, you may enjoy Puella Magi Madoka Magica, another popular magical girl series with similarly dark tones, very cute magical girl outfits, and notable soundtrack (headphones recommended!).
So I hear you like sweeping action magical girl romance anime with plenty of suffering, whose animation isn't the greatest but whose story compels you all the same.
Just as Sailor Moon Crystal is that, so too Puella Magi Madoka Magica is that. Except Madoka is even more gay.
The downside is that PMMM is only one cour and one movie long, but to make it up for you there's an expansive multiverse of side stories and spin-offs (although, sadly, the gacha which comprises a large part of the lore is closing its doors to monolingual English speakers on 2020 September 29). Sailor Moon Crystal is a more faithful manga adaptation in comparison to the 1992 version, and it includes the darker moments that make it more similar to Madoka Magica.
