I think both of these are pretty similar in terms of random comedy and all the spoof/parodies they have. They're both pretty enjoyable.
Although they seem to be very different, they actually are kinda similiar. Both series have many parodies and funny jokes. There is a wide-variety of characters that are all cool in their own way. The lead role in both of these series are just plain awesome!(But very different) These series both have alot of comedy and laugh-out-loud moments.
They are both great and funny series, with mostly episodic plot and parodies.

Do you enjoy comedy shows laced with parodies, odd but lovable characters, unexpected action scenes and surprisingly thoughtful undertones? Both Gintama and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei are a must watch for the fans of this sort of Japanese humor. Although they do require at least a shallow understanding of the culture and popular anime/manga due to the constant references and parody gags, so if you just got into watching anime you might want to save these for later.
Both have alot of strange and wacky comedy in it and characters getting caught up into all kinds of strange antics in it and have feudal inspired settings too.
