Books are a central part of both plots. The two anime share the same genres of mystery and historical. The only differences are the art style, time setting, and the main character's personality.
Mystery fills the atmosphere of both series not to mention the bits of comedy, drama, and that little unique style both series throws in.
It seems that both series has appealing characters with the main character being a calmed individual and generally unfazed when thrown into a mystery/situation.
