-Both feature a japanese main character that happens to get thrown in a group of 'criminals'. In Black Lagoon it's a group of mercenaries, while in Great Pretender it's a group of con artists.
-There are interesting backstories for the members of the group.
-Black Lagoon is more of a thriller with mature themes but both series show the darker sides of humanity.
-There's a very distinct western vibe in both shows.
- We get to see the risky heists and missions of the groups.
Main female characters are very similar, pacing is similar, and it follows a similar group of people.
Great Pretender reminded me of Black Lagoon when looking at the shows' Main Character. Edamame and Rock are thrown into a similar situation they can't escape and have to adapt to their new risky lifestyle. They undergo a big personality change through the duration of the anime thanks to this.
Black Lagoon felt overall more mature but Great Pretender also had its moments.
And the most obvious similarity, the two anime focus on a band of criminals.
Ordinary(ish) japanese man ends up in a foreigner gang. Many character parallels can be found and both have the same vibe IMO.
Both anime have the same vibe to it when it comes to the characters.
Great Pretender mainly focuses on doing thing on the good side, while Black Lagoon mainly focuses on the sketchy side.
We have Abby from Great Pretender, while Black Lagoon have Revy as the badass tomboy.
Both anime tend to not have one particular setting and the characters like to travel around the world
Black lagoon and great pretender are almost same..They both have a japanese mc who got no job and gets involved with international gang....Both anime have similar situation and setting except the fact black lagoon is a bit dark...

Black Lagoon and Great Pretender bear many similarities, including a meek Japanese protagonist, a diverse cast from around the world, and all of them traveling around the world to commit large-scale crime.

Both series involve elements that arent usually seen in anime and rather in movies or series and are about a group of "criminals" and their adventures in small arcs that each last about 3 to 5 episodes

While Great Pretender is not as raw as Black Lagoon, both shows have noticeable commonalities. To start, both of them are based around "missions", if you will, carried out by a group of mercenaries. There are also great similarities between main characters. Great Pretender's lead Makoto Edamura is a bit like Rock - they're both uninitiated guys thrown into big business situations they're not prepared for, and they never lose their hearts no matter what happens. Meanwhile, Great Pretender's main female character Abigail Jones is just a much calmer version of Revy; however, both of them are particularly violent and aggressive - especially to their

Watch as captivating characters descend into the world’s underground and reveal that good and bad are often difficult to distinguish, appearances can be deceiving, and that people are a lot more vulnerable than they think.
Average japanese dude gets thrown into a group of criminals, same type of stuff happens in both animes even tho Great Pretender is way less violent, and both amazing animes.
Both talk about a life of crime, have good and interesting (and likeable) characters, and also have strong plots that make you interested.
