Both have a Main Character who is pretty much clueless about what they get themselves into, and both Main Characters start out weak but slowly become more powerful with each new challenge they face. Each series has a large cast of lovable and not so lovable characters that are the true driving force of each story. Although both are Shounen animes, Air Gear contains more mature content(Nudity,Language,Blood etc.) then Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi does, However, this does not take away from the fact that both series always find a way to keep things intresting and exciting. Do you like martial arts moves? Then this series is fit for you. Although the main characters are worlds apart, the fights are intence and the humor in them is great. Enjoy it like I enjoyed it!
Similar? To say there isn't an overlap in tropes is an understatement, yet each series has a bizarre twist on a real world sport, making for a rather interesting...
I'm honestly not sure what kind of words to use, beyond the fact both series are technically of the crackfic genre, yet are the last two series one might think of said genre due to how cleverly implemented the bizarre twists regarding the sport chosen. Willing suspense of disbelief should normally not be suspended either, yet no suspense is actually felt, due to the world building and rule creating for both series. Plus, add in an interesting

it has the same feel to it... when you watch one it reminds you of the other the only difference is that one is a martial arts show and the other one has skates an the main sport but none the less similar
