Both follow highly cynical and jaded protagonists who are despised by the world due to things that are out of their control (Naofumi for being the Shield Hero and Ryner for possessing Alpha Stigma). In both cases, they specialise in magic and team up with a young girl who is skilled with a sword (Raphtalia/Ferris).
While Naofumi and Ryner would much rather not take part in the world's conflict, they are nevertheless forced into it by the King (Naofumi is fighting the Waves because it's his only way of returning home, while Ryner is gathering the Hero's Relics out of a favour to Sion).

They are both about an underdog with awe-inspiring power that is hard to control. They both have a secondary character that remains with the main character even when being pushed away. They have similar settings.

These animes had similar vibes. The settings are both fantasy, and the protagonist pretends not to care but also helps others, especially those he cares about. Both have a sort of "corruption" ability which brings them to attack their friends, and both are manipulated by the nobility although it is in very different ways. Both shows are quite enjoyable and if you liked one, you will probably like the other ^^
