Differences: Akame ga Kill's Night Raides group has more members. Akame ga Kill is fantasy and medieval while HoTD is more realistic and in the current time. HoTD is very ecchi.
The differences are HUGE, but both have kind of the same feel.
Fast-paced, action-packed anime with lots of bloody violence. Lots of fan service, High School of the Dead being another league of course. Fighting to survive in pretty much every episode.
These are seinen Anime with shounen-level plots.
Both shows thrust the characters into a situation of grave danger, where there is a great risk of characters dying.
Tatsumi = Takashi Komuro
Tough MC who gets to enjoy much "plot" without significant character development.
Mine= Saya Takagi
Both are pink-haired, twintailed, gun-loving tsunderes.
The former is understandably leagues above the latter in her weapon of choice, but if HOTD got a few more seasons, Takagi could emulate Mine.
Esdeath = Saeko
Both suffer from serious psychological issues despite being stoic ladies of war, and are very popular with the respective fanbases.
Lubbock= Kohta
Leone= The Nurse (forgot name) etc...
