Both series' have heavy internal narration by cynical, nameless leads as they try to make sense of the chaos billowing around them. Neither move in a linear timeframe.
Though they're very different in setting, both are seinen comedies with lots of satire.
Other similarities are that they have unusual visual styles, non-linear storytelling, and internal monologues of a lead character whose name remains unknown throughout the show.

These two both feature rather (initially) abstract story-telling methods, often showing things in confusing order and out of context. Both build up as you learn more about their worlds. They feature excellent and creative directing, a unique sense of style, and a wonderful blend of comedy, philosophy, and drama. They feature some fantastical elements that are used (sometimes metaphorically) to move the story in interesting directions. They also have very distinct art styles.
