Both are a mixture of slice of life/sci-fi and comedy. They both include main characters who are annoyed by their close friends (aliens). Both aliens have a liking for water and fish. The main characters at the beginning are friendless, but after getting involved with the aliens they form fun relationships with different people. Both animes have issues with their surroundings (''habitats'').

Both anime have a vibrant palette which closely echoes the varied personalities that comprise the show's unique cast of characters.
Both anime are light in tone but Tsuritama delves much deeper into non-trivial issues, whereas Arakawa is just straight up entertaining tinged with very tender moments. Both series are outstanding and well worth the viewership!
Also the soundtrack to both shows are excellent; it really sets the tone for the anime.
In each, a protagonist under immense social pressure finds his worries lifting as he lives by the water with a cast of strange characters, one of whom claims to be an alien. Two hilarious series that will wow you with beautiful scenery and bright colors, captivate you with interesting characters, and put a smile on your face.
