There is a similar atmosphere in these two series. The character designs are colorful and bishoujo-influenced, and the action sequences are flashy and involve magic. Both series also contain drama as a main point, as well as action. They also take place in urban environments.
They are both fantasy-based, but Nanoha takes the magical girl trope a little further than Shana. Shana is more of just a magic-based fighter rather than the traditional magical girl.
Both series have extremely similar atmospheres and features. Both are worth a shot.
