Both are similar tonally. Also, the main protagonist is complicated in both series. Expect a great samurai show out of the both; they are masterpieces for those who like slow pacing and human/mature characterization.

The two are a mature character driven story examining wavering moralities. Both anime employs a handful of characters to tell its story and spends its time fleshing out only a few of them. Its character focus rests primarily on the characterization and relationships of the MC and his supporting cast.
Watching Onihei or Five Leaves for action would be a mistake, that doesn’t mean that both shows don’t have action scenes they have them here and there. Samurai-centered series set in Edo that have a cozy period atmosphere. Both are more preoccupied with characters and interactions, and the themes of sympathy towards criminals are present in both series. I would be very surprised if you liked one and disliked the other.
