I find that Saber (F/SN) & Sousuke Sagara (FMP!) are very similiar. The pragmatic soldier type that thinks of battle 24/7. While FMP! was more comedic because he was out of place F/SN has Saber in the right environment. The Romance story also takes on a more serious tone. While FMP! keeps the shounen inexperienced, lack of bravery in all regards romantic like confessing one's love; F/SN manages to develop romance and pay it off. FMP! might be mecha/comedy, while F/SN is a more serious magic/action show, both have some similarities that make them both pretty compatible for viewers. Both are about a highly skilled, serious, tough-as-nails character (Sagara in FMP, Saber in F/SN) who have to protect a high school student (Chidori in FMP, Shirou in F/SN) because they hold the key to aquiring a magical macguffin. Over time, they open up, and they start questioning if they're fighting to protect Chidori/Shirou for their original mission, or if they are fighting because they care for them.
