Both of these anime deals with death. The characters in these anime are given second chances to experience life again and accept life.
They are simular because it deals with peoples dying, and being trapped in another world, due to suicide, or hateful feelings toward god and lived a horrible life. In both animes, they both are given another chance to live and try to accept their lives. I really like both of these animes because they give you a warm feeling while watching.
Afterlife, purgatory, righting your wrongs, those are the themes for both of these anime. Though Angel Beats starts as a comedy and gets serious only in second half while Colorful is a drama the whole time, if you like these themes you might still want to give those two a try.
