Both concentrated on the life a person aiming to be a pro in some sport. In Yawara, the female is unwilling to play judo but is very skilled at it whereas in Major, the protagonist has a passion for baseball and will eventually as the title suggests, play in the Majors. Major follows the protagonist from childhood till adulthood while Yawara starts from high school life to adulthood.
The love aspect is stronger in Yawara whereas in Major there is barely or slightly any love life involved (only one can be sensed but it doesn't affect greatly on the protagonist's game play as much as
